Inclusive Language Session for APG Hong Kong and Singapore
In October 2025, I had the opportunity to host a workshop for the APG teams in Hong Kong and Singapore, lead by the DEI team in the region.
We talked about why inclusive language matters and its impact on individuals, organizations and society as a whole.
Inclusive language is not a dictionary or a glossary but a mindset, a set of principles and an intention that translates into inclusion with verbal and non-verbal communication.
We covered the key principles of inclusive language: neutrality, accuracy, relevance and people-first language and shared best practices that organizations are adopting:
– Inclusive language advisory boards
– Inclusive greetings
– Use of AI/ tech to audit internal and external language across all communications
– Standardizing language and terms across the organization
– Reducing acronyms and embedding them in the onboarding
– Moving away from “cultural fit” to “cultural ad”
– Creating a culture of open feedback to understand how people want to be treated
The session included case scenarios, group discussion and real cases involving inclusive language.
